5 out of 5 Stars

At Barinkoff Academy, there's only one rule: no students on campus after curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.

When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was one of the most original stories I've read in a long time! It was just such a refreshing twist on zombies and it was a really good love story!

The main character is Phoenix McKay, and she is simply a typical seventeen year old girl with her own issues. She's a little rebellious and really hurting inside since the death of her mother. She has been sent off to Barinkoff Academy, a prestigious boarding school and feels somewhat abandoned by her emotionally distant father. Her character was likable, even if there were a couple of time when I wanted to yell at her, "No! What are you doing?" lol. I was happy reading about her and the things she was going through, and she was easy to relate to.

There are not one but two love interests that Phoenix has to decide between. Dark haired & obsidian-eyed Demitri. He is serious and protective of Phoenix, but can be a little domineering. And then there is Luka, with his blond hair, ice blue eyes and mischievous smile, he's more relaxed and teasing than Demitri. Both guys are extremely handsome, the kind of sexy that leaves you breathless when they smile, so Phoenix really has her work cut out for her!

I don't want to give away too much of the story, so I'm not going to go into the plot too much. Suffice it to say it was a very interesting read and kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end (I didn't want to put it down). I didn't know what was going to happen till the end of the book, so it wasn't predictable. There was action, mystery, danger, suspense, and (my favorite) romance!

Kate's writing is really descriptive and flows so well that I wouldn't have known that this was her debut novel if I hadn't read it. It definitely doesn't read like a first book, if this is how she starts out, then I can't wait to see what else she writes! Overall, it was a really good book and I'm so glad I got to read it!

"Were you hoping I was something else? A vampire perhaps? Or a werewolf maybe? I hear they are popular these days."

  2. No, Jess started like 5 different books before her last one and didn't finish them lol. I'm a total book snob and won't read something unless I really, really think I'll like it :) I get so emotionally involved with the characters in books, if I read a bad book it affects me for days. So I'm really picky :)
