Blurb: Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.
Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.
It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.
This was a really good read and has a lot of good things going for it: A great Urban Fantasy, an unsolved mystery to figure out, and really likable characters. It could also work as a standalone, although they are meant to be read in order. I wish I had read the first book beforehand, I wasn't lost or anything, but now that I'm done with this book I want more!
I loved the main characters from the beginning, DJ and Alex work great together, and they've got great chemistry whether they act on it or not. They already act like they are together in almost all ways, except romantically.
I would have liked to see a little more development in the romance department (this is a personal preference) because although DJ goes on three different dates (with three different guys) nothing seems to be going on there. Originally I thought it was a Paranormal Romance, so I was expecting more, well romance. The book is technically categorized as an Urban Fantasy, but sometimes these two genres get pushed into the same category. But it does have romantic undertones, and there is a hint of more to come, especially at the end and it made me like the book even more! I can't wait to see what happens with DJ in the next book.
Even the side characters in this book are well-developed, and very interesting. Jean Lafitte is especially one that I could see a whole book on. Come on, sexy undead pirate, what's not to love? I also loved the setting of the book, even though it is post Katrina, New Orleans just seems to hold a magic that no other city can. You can also really tell that the author has lived there because her knowledge of the city shows in the wonderful little details that you get throughout the book.
Overall a really good read! If you like Urban Fantasy, or even a little mystery/action this is probably the book for you. It was well written, with a good solid story and great characters and I would definitely recommend it!
